JOHN NEWMAN,  C.1771

A fine example of "Horology 1776" is this rare tall clock by John Newman, Boston clockmaker and organist.  His younger brother Robert was sexton at Old North Church where on that famous night in April 1775 he hung  lanterns in its steeple to alert his fellow patriot Paul Revere about British troops marching towards Lexington and Concord.  John apprenticed to famed Boston clockmaker Gawen Brown and named his son after him.  John and Gawen married sisters, Sarah and Mary Flagg .   John served and fought in the Continental Army under then Captain Gawen Brown.
